In 1519, Ferdinand Magellan and his ragtag crew of 250 men left Spain on a voyage around the world. Credited as being the first human to sail around the world, Magellan did it without radar, sonar, radio, or global positioning systems. Magellan did it the old-fashioned way: with maps, a compass, a sextant, and the stars. Most importantly, Magellan had to plan and coordinate all the efforts of his crew in a way that kept them focused, on track, and alive.
